Marriages often run into their share of troubles. In many cases, this leads to the desire for a divorce. However, divorce isn’t the only choice a couple has, as legal separation is also an option that struggling Maryland couples have. This is especially true when there are children involved.

When children are part of the mix, many couples want to try to make their marriage work for the benefit of their children. While this isn’t a bad idea, it may not necessarily be the best one either. However, there are ways to work to improve one’s marriage before getting a divorce.

Couples can try something new, whether it be therapy, a weekend getaway with no kids, or some self-help advice. Some couples find it beneficial to sit down, open up and have a full-fledged conversation. It is a great way for many couples to find new ground. Every couple, when trying to save a marriage, should focus on just that — saving the marriage. Without focus and real commitment, a marriage generally cannot be saved.

A number of couples would prefer to go straight to divorce, but in many cases, a legal separation may help some figure out what they want before finalizing the decision. For many Maryland couples, divorce ends up being the final option, but if a couple has children and wants to try to work it out for the sake of the kids, a legal separation may be preferential since it will provide stipulations similar to that of a divorce decree yet without the status “divorced.”
